Chennai has a hot and humid climate due to its location in the tropical zone of the climate. Three major seasons--summers, winter and monsoon- are the main seasons, yet there is a slight variation is seen in climate due to its location near the equator. So, Chennai, the gateway to southern India gets a hot climate throughout the year. The summer falls in between the months of June to September and the summer days are hot too much.
The hottest months of the year are April and May; the soaring mercury crosses 40°C. The monsoon starts from the month of June and it continues till September, during monsoon Chennai gets moderate rainfall due to its location near the seaside. The annual average rainfall is 1,300mm.
Winter comes for a short period in Chennai which falls in between November and February. This time period is considered as the best time to visit Chennai city. The average winter temperature is 24°C. Winter months also get some rainfall which makes the weather comfortable.
