Chennai Languages

The primary language of Chennai is Tamil, yet English is the official language of city.
Tamil, the mother tongue of the native people is widely spoken. It has some fusion words of Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi-Urdu. The Tamil language has a full-fledged grammar.

A Telegu speaking minority also live in Chennai. Malayalam and Urdu are also spoken by a group of people. Chennai is also home to Marwari traders, Anglo Indian, Bengali, north Indians who speak their own languages.

English is widely spoken by the middle class and upper class sect of the society. One will not face any difficulty while visiting the travel sites, shopping centers, and business centers, because English is spoken by taxi drivers, waiters, guide, etc.
