Kandaswamy Temple
The Kandaswamy temple is one of the most revered temples in Chennai city located at Cheyyur which is near to Madurantakam town. One can reach this temple by any means of public transport or hiring a private taxi.
The origin of the temple location Cheyyur has an ancestral story to tell. During the reign of Veera Rajendra Chola and Kulothungan-III, this village was settled, and they built three temples here of which one is Kandaswamy.
The Kandaswamy temple is the middle temple located in between the Shiva and Vishnu temples. The main shrine of the temple is Lord Kandaswamy or the other shrines of the temple are Lord Someswara, Goddess Meenakshi and Muthukumaraswamy. It also houses other deities like the Vinayaka, Dakshinamurthy and Chandikeswara. Muruga who is the other son of Lord Shiva is one of the main deities whish stands on five different positions. These five postures of the deity are called by their distinct names like - Nrutta Skandar (dancing Muruga), Brahma Sastha (created from Brahma), Balaskandar (child Shanmuga), Sivagurunathar (as teacher to Shiva) and Pulinthar (vedan hunter).
Tourist visits this temple to explore its different figures of deity standing in distinct postures. The other attraction is the image of Kazhukundran who made an artful creation of a temple car in 1521 A.D.
