Thousand Lights Mosque
Thousand Lights Mosque is located at Anna Salai Road and it is a revered place of worship of the Muslims. It was built in mid 18th century. The land where the mosque is situated donated by Nawab Wallajah. It covers 3 acres of land. Thousand Lights Mosque is a holy pilgrimage site for the Shiite Muslims and it is visited by a large number of tourists.
The mosque is named as Thousand Lights Mosque because it is said that 1000 lamps need to be lit to illuminate the assembly hall. People say that Indian National Congress provided the lights to mark their visit to Madras. The medieval architecture of the mosque is stunning with its multi domes and minarets. The height of the minaret is 64 feet above the ground. Quotes of Holy Quran decorate the mosques. The devotees pray at the grand hall of the mosque and it has a separate room for women.
