Thanjavur, Chennai

Bragatheeswarar Temple
Bragatheeswarar Temple is located in the heart of the town which is the symbol of Chola architecture as well the world’s first completed granite temple. It was built by Rajaraja Cholan, the Great Chola King. One will surprise to see here Saraswati Mahal Library, which houses the rarest collection of manuscripts. The temple’s gateway is stunning to catch one’s glance. The main attractions are its Mandapa covered by grand walls of carved sculptures. Though this temple was modified by the later rulers yet it is the height of the Cholas.
Thanjavur Palace
The palace is a must visit site in Thanjavur. Built in 1550 AD both Nayakas and Marathas put efforts to build this palace. This splendid structure is known for its fine masonry.
Tanjore paintings
Thanjavur is also known for its distinctive style of painting. The paintings are done on glass or board and decorated with gold leaves and gems. The temples motifs are mainly Lord Krishna and other Hindu Gods and goddesses.
The other attractions of Thanjavur are the South Zone Culture Centre established by Indian Government and the Tamil University which houses the Museum with collections of Chola bronzes.
