St. Mary's Church Chennai
One of the oldest surviving English Churches in India, St. Mary’s Church is a not to be missed site in Chennai. This religious place of worship is visited by a large number of devotees and tourists. It is located at the premises of St. George Fort in Chennai. This is believed as the first Anglican Church in Chennai which was built during the period of 1678 to 1680 A.D. It is also known as the Westminster Abbey of East. It was built by William Dixon and designed by Edward Fowle.
On the Annunciation day of Virgin Mary, the foundation of the building was laid. It has undergone many changes and later Sanctuary, Steeple, Tower and the Vestry were added to it. It covers an area of 5400 sq feet area covered by thick walls. The interiors of the church were decorated with finest wood works and glass furnishings. A painting of the Last Supper is seen at the altarpiece.
