Santhome Cathedral Basilica Chennai
The Santhome Cathedral Basilica Church is a catholic church in Chennai. Catholics have a belief that St. Thomas, one of the 12 apostles of Christ first introduced Christianity to India. It is believed that St. Thomas visited the Malabar Coast and later he moved towards Coromandel Coast of India. People said that St Thomas spent some years in a cave at the little hillock Chinnamlai in Tamil Nadu and he was pierced into death by a group of sages at St. Thomas Mount (Chennai) in 72 AD. A magnificent cathedral was erected here in his memory.
Due to the historical belief of Santhome Cathedral Basilica Chennai, Christians from all over the world visit this church as a holy pilgrimage centre. It is located in the southern part of the Marina beach. The style of the church is gothic style architecture.
